I am a big fan of your conical espresso cups -
can you tell us about the Dubai commission
and how you came up with the concept for the
cups?
There are couple general ways of making test
tiles but I chose to make them in cone shape. I
had limited space so I wanted to minimize while
they are stacked. And I thought it would be easy
to glaze, jut dip them in different depths and I get
to see how glazes looks when applied in different
thickness. But when I had them stacked in the
corner of my studio people thought it was cute
and wanted to buy them and I had to turn them
down.
I was telling this to Eric and he told me that I
should make a cup somehow. Then immediately I
heard my brain siren howling SHOT SHOT SHOT
SHOT shot shot… so I made shot glasses that
you couldn’t put down unless you finished your
drink. And Korean people always say lets drink
and die. It originally came with no base. But some
people thought I was cruel and too spartan. So I
listened and made a base.
Then there were these people who wanted to
open a coffee spot and wanted my cups and they
requested to make those shot glasses larger for
espresso. Two years later, another couple was on
their honeymoon and stopped by Giorgiporgi for
a coffee and called me to check out my studio.
