The Compass Winter 2024 | Page 2

Letter from the President

As we worked on the articles for this issue of The Compass , I was struck by how consistently Baylor Scott & White Health ’ s Values — we serve faithfully ; we never settle ; we are in it together ; and we make an impact — come to life . Living out these values requires a forward-thinking approach and philanthropic support . Donors play a crucial role in funding research , developing patient-centered programs , and recruiting and training the talent needed to advance our Mission .
You ’ ll read about our newly launched
Street Medicine program , which addresses the medical needs of people experiencing homelessness . The program aims to break down barriers to care and restore hope to some of our community ’ s most vulnerable members . Funded by philanthropy , the Street Medicine program shows how we serve faithfully , and we are in it together .
You ’ ll also read interviews with Dr . Shelley Hall and Dr . Giuliano Testa , whose leadership has been pivotal in advancing transplant medicine at Baylor University Medical Center ( BUMC ). They emphasize how Baylor Scott & White ’ s culture of innovation encourages physicians to push boundaries and embrace new possibilities . Philanthropy supports these advancements , funding research , training and programs that enable innovation . Dr . Hall joined BUMC at a time when heart failure-focused transplant programs were rare . BUMC leaders hired her as the first heart failure transplant cardiologist , marking a shift from traditional surgeon-led transplant programs . Dr . Hall has helped redefine the role of medical doctors in transplant medicine , expanding what is possible for patients .
Abdominal transplant surgeon Dr . Giuliano Testa leads the uterus transplant program , one of the first in the United States . This program gives women born without a uterus the opportunity to experience pregnancy and delivery . The program reflects the value we never settle and has allowed 18 women to bring 25 babies into the world .
As you read these stories , it ’ s clear that Baylor Scott & White ’ s Values aren ’ t just words — they ’ re actions that change lives . These transformations are only possible through the partnership of our generous donors , whose support drives innovation , extends care and helps us care for those we are privileged to serve . Together , we make an impact .
