SPECIAL EVENT
Grand Rounds golfers score big
Letter from the Chair
Every year , I attend the Celebrating Women Luncheon , and I leave feeling deeply connected to the mission , inspired by the patient stories I ’ ve heard and grateful for all those in the room and across our community who have generously supported the fight against breast cancer .
This October ’ s event was no different , and the inspiring messages of hope and healing were perfectly captured in LeAnn Rimes ’ powerful closing song , “ There Will Be a Better Day .” The lyrics of this song resonated deeply with me and with everyone who attended the luncheon .
This message of hope is also the message of the Foundation , which supports the lifesaving work of Baylor Scott & White Health in our community . Thanks to the generous donors and sponsors who contributed to Celebrating Women , more than $ 2.5 million was raised to support breast cancer research , treatment and care at Baylor Scott & White . These funds will help provide advanced care for patients and make possible better days ahead for them and their families .
Whether it ’ s donors who supported research that led to better treatments for heart failure patients , or those whose gifts purchased specialty equipment to give the tiniest NICU patients the ability
to grow and thrive , or philanthropic investments in programs like Arts in Medicine that heal the body and soul , philanthropy is making better days possible for patients across the System .
As we prepare for a new year , I am grateful for the impact your philanthropy has made possible and look forward to the better days in store for us all .
Annual golf tournament raises $ 270,000 to support medical education for Baylor Scott & White Health .
More than 160 golfers enjoyed unseasonably warm — and wildly windy — weather during the 21st Annual Grand Rounds ® Golf Tournament in November , raising more than $ 270,000 to support graduate medical education ( GME ) at Baylor Scott & White Health .
“ This was such a spectacular event ,” said Jacob Reiss , MD , a general cardiology fellow at Baylor University Medical Center ( BUMC ). Dr . Reiss was one of several fellows who participated in the tournament , which was held at Omni
PGA Frisco . “ The venue was beautiful , and I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with members of the business community and learn about what motivates them to support graduate medical education at Baylor Scott & White .”
The need for increasing the physician workforce is critical — Texas faces a shortage of 10,000 physicians by 2032 . This crisis is expected to worsen as the population of older adults grows and current physicians retire — more than 2 of 5 currently active US physicians will be 65 or older within the next decade , according to the Association of American Medical Colleges . The issue is exacerbated by the limited number of residency positions nationwide , which are needed to train qualified medical school graduates .
For many Grand Rounds sponsors and donors , motivation comes from the knowledge that Baylor Scott & White doesn ’ t just train doctors — it shapes the country ’ s future physician leaders . In the next 10 years , BUMC will train more than
3,000 physicians . The impact this program will have on the future health and wellbeing of our communities cannot be underestimated — according to recent statistics , 65 % of residents and fellows who train in Texas remain in Texas to provide care for its citizens .
“ Philanthropic support through events like Grand Rounds helps promote the health and well-being of our community by nurturing the best and brightest minds , equipping them to provide safe , high-quality and compassionate patient care ,” said Norm Bagwell , board chair for Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation . “ We ’ re incredibly grateful for the continued support of donors and sponsors who are committed to advancing the future of healthcare .”
Since the inaugural tournament , generous players and sponsors have raised more than $ 3.8 million for GME programs at BUMC . For more information on how you can support this important work , please contact Courtney Stoutimore at Courtney . Stoutimore @ BSWHealth . org or 214.820.7410 .
