Letter from the Chair
“ All endings are also beginnings — we just don ’ t know it at the time ” — Mitch Albom
2020 was quite the double-edged sword . It ’ s been a time unlike any other I can remember in terms of change , challenges and division , and we hear every day that people can ’ t wait for this year to be over . However , we would be remiss if we didn ’ t seek out positives amongst the chaos . More family time . Slowing down for the first time in a long time . Reading new books . Being forced to look at things from other people ’ s perspectives . Deeper consideration into how our choices affect others . While the end of 2020 is highly anticipated , I hope that the lessons learned these 12 months will stay with us as we approach the new year and new beginnings .
Similarly , although Dr . Göran Klintmalm ’ s time at Baylor Scott & White Health has come to an end , there is so much to reflect on in a positive manner . His dedication over the last few decades grew the Baylor Scott & White transplant program into one of the largest and most respected in the country . Since the program began in 1984 , more than
11,000 organ transplants have been performed . And the commitment to innovation and excellence has continued , most recently through the launch of the uterine transplant program , which has become the most successful effort of its kind in the world . Dr . Klintmalm ’ s dedication and vision helped make this program what it is today . The next generation of leadership at the Transplant Institute is positioned to build on his legacy and will take the institute to new heights . Having received a kidney transplant in 2006 , I am personally and forever grateful to Baylor , the team at the Transplant Institute and Dr . K . for their life ’ s work and the continuing lifesaving care that impacts so many .
My holiday wish for you and all of us is that the blessings we ’ ve received through hard-fought trials this year will not be forgotten . Remember 2020 . Not only the hard times , but the unexpected gifts as well . And carry them over into a healthy , happy 2021 .
