Letter from the Chair
How many times in life have you wished you had the opportunity for a do-over ? A chance to try something again after failing , correct a mistake , handle a conversation differently or choose a better path . Second chances are special because they ’ re never guaranteed . However , at Baylor Scott & White second chances are given every day — second chances at life . When I read the story about the uterine transplant reunion , I was astounded by the unwavering dedication of Drs . Testa and Johannesson to make uterine transplant an option for families facing infertility . Their commitment , and the brave women who donated their uteri , are giving women a second chance to carry their own child .
I think about the countless women battling breast cancer who have been given a second chance at life thanks to advances in diagnosis , treatment and care — many of those made possible thanks to generous donors to Celebrating Women over the last 22 years . I reflect upon the incredible story
BSW patient Katie Looney shared at the Foundation board meeting in May . This young woman recalled the remarkable story of her car crash , drowning and eventual healing through the care provided by the team at Baylor University Medical Center . She reflected on her gratitude and how this second chance at life has changed her perspective , sharing , “ I would say that a lot of life is the same — people , places and job — what ’ s the most different is what ’ s in your head . Whenever you go through something so traumatic and you ’ re able to come out of it , you look at the world a little differently , you look at people a little different . You see the love and the care that has been provided to you … you ’ re just a little bit more thankful and you ’ re a little bit more intentional with what you do with your time , how you treat people and how you love people .”
Philanthropy is all about providing opportunities that would not otherwise be possible — in essence , second chances . Every research project supported by donors advances the opportunity for innovative treatments . Every patient-centered program funded enhances the care provided for patients . Every investment made in highly trained caregivers makes it possible to restore a sick / injured person to wellness . We know that maintaining excellence takes focused intention and continuous investment , and I am grateful for the second chances this generous donor support provides .
