Letter from the President
Since I arrived 18 months ago , the stories of patients at Baylor University Medical Center are a continuous source of motivation in my work each day . From cured cancer cases to successful transplants , to a patient being revived after a deadly car accident — each life changed propels our Mission and promotes hope to the communities we serve . Their stories affirm the important role BUMC plays both in Dallas and throughout Texas .
We ’ re thrilled to share one of these remarkable BUMC stories with you in this issue — a story that demonstrates the impact made by the commitment of physicians , the dedication of nurses and the strategies being advanced by leadership — all coming together to strengthen the care we provide .
As the saying goes , good things come in threes , and BUMC is no exception . BUMC ’ s trifecta is rooted in three key identities it holds as a healthcare provider : first , as a nonprofit community hospital for Dallas on track to see 36,000 discharges and
4,000 births this year ; second , as a safety net emergency department ( Level I comprehensive trauma center ) that sees
90,000 visits a year ; and third , as a highly specialized referral center that receives
400 transfers each month for complex , super sub-specialized care . These three cords of service are woven tightly together to promote the health and wellness of our community .
To continue this theme of threes , I ’ d like to note several areas where philanthropy makes a difference at BUMC . Donor support impacts patient-centered programs , research and medical education that benefit patients every day :
Our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit offers programs that support our tiniest patients and equip families to care for their newborns . Innovative research is part of our DNA — several physicians on the medical staff at
BUMC were published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine in the past couple of years alone . With over 270 residents and fellows across the hospital , future clinical leaders are training side by side with the very physicians that treat you — preparing to serve the next generation of Texans .
Philanthropy has a substantial role in advancing efforts in each of these areas . It ’ s a privilege to partner with the healthcare team and administration on the important role philanthropy plays to enhance care and improve outcomes .
