and community as a whole . Many of our faculty work with both the hospital and the medical school . This creates an integrated and seamless learning experience for our residents and medical students alike .”
In addition to the academic affiliation , Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth has a diverse patient population that provides a rich experience for residents . A leader in advanced care for heart disease , transplantation , oncology , and women ’ s services , Baylor Scott & White All Saints offers residents the opportunity to be a part of groundbreaking medical care and research .
The three-year Internal Medicine residency works on a block schedule program with four-week rotations in areas such as critical care , emergency medicine , and cardiology . Each resident participates in a four-week on-call , overnight float pool where they work with the physician on-call to tend to patients ’ needs .
Teamwork and leadership are the theme of all rotations . Residents attend daily huddles where they interact with various disciplines . For inpatient services , this includes care management , social services , physical medicine , pharmacy , nutrition , pastoral care , and other services that provide direct care to patients . Sanborn says , “ Our mission is to integrate these physicians into the Baylor Scott & White Health culture by encouraging residents to form relationships with their peers and the rest of our team members to promote trust , collaboration , and coordination when providing care for our patients .”
In addition to regular rotations within the hospital , residents participate in a variety of hands-on simulation and point-of-care training labs where they can participate in real-life scenarios in advanced facilities . These simulation labs and trainings provide residents valuable opportunities to develop critical skills and confidence in their abilities .
Residents are also required to complete at least two projects during their residency . One of these projects must be a research project . According to core faculty member Stevan Gonzalez , MD , “ We believe scholarly activity is essential to clinical training . The goal is to provide a framework for residents to contribute to advancement in the field and develop new approaches to benefit our patients .”
In preparation for the first cohort of residents , the hospital with the help of Baylor Scott & White All Saints Health Foundation , has renovated existing spaces for learning , studying , collaboration , and relaxation to meet the needs of the physician residents , program faculty , and staff .
The first class of medical residents at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth
Construction continues as we look to welcome our first class of Obstetrics and Gynecology , Emergency Medicine and Transitional Year residents in July 2022 . By the 2027-2028 academic year , we expect to have a total of 150 residents on campus .
Philanthropy plays a significant role in sustaining a graduate medical education program . Hospitals that train residents incur real and significant costs for this training beyond those customarily associated with providing patient care . Medicare offsets only a portion of these costs .
