Art and music as a healing modality
Here are some of the musicians you can expect to see at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth : ince 2019 , the Arts in Medicine program at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth has enriched the lives of patients and promoted a healing environment through music and visual arts . On any given day in the hospital , you may hear the soothing sounds of a cello , classical guitar , or keyboard , or see a painter creating a work of art . These professionally trained musicians and artists from the community , including performers from the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth , bring their talents into public spaces such as lobbies , waiting rooms , and other common areas around the hospital campus .
Funded wholly by philanthropy , the Arts in Medicine program integrates music and the performing arts to promote healing and enhance the lives of our patients , their families , visitors , and caregivers . It also builds on community partnerships around the arts , health , and medicine .
The program recognizes that patients are , first and foremost , people — and people can experience healing that extends beyond the physical .
Research has examined the effects of creative art therapies on patients ’ psychological symptoms and quality of life . The research team concluded that these therapies significantly reduced anxiety , depression , and pain , and improved patients ’ quality of life . Here are some of the musicians you can expect to see at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth :
A New York native , cellist Craig Leffer holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music . Currently he performs with the Fort Worth Symphony and Dallas Opera orchestras , Texas Winds Musical Outreach , and as artist-in-residence for Baylor Scott & White .
A Dallas native , harpist Alison Read , received her Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her Master of Music at Southern Methodist University . She is an artist-in-residence for Baylor Scott & White and the principal harpist at both the Abilene Philharmonic and Abilene Opera . During the summer , Alison is Principal Harpist of the Utah Festival Opera .
Jane Escueta received her bachelor ’ s and master ’ s degrees in violin performance from Indiana University . She is the Dallas County Program Manager of Texas Winds Musical Outreach , which serves seniors , veterans , and preschool children across the DFW Metroplex .
Juliana Crownover has been painting and teaching in pastels , oils , mixed , and water media for over 20 years . She uses light and color to bring out beauty in everyday life . She notes that beauty is all around us and recommends that we slow down in our daily lives so that we may see it . Aside from the end-goal of finished art , Juliana believes the process should be enjoyed .
Gernard Hill followed his passion for music throughout school and majored in music performance on trombone at Grambling State University . He is currently seeking a degree in recording arts at Media Tech Institute in Dallas . According to Gernard , music changed his life and he wants to share that gift with everyone .
Mark Landson grew up in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , and graduated from the Eastman School of Music . He is a violinist , violist , composer , and founder of multiple music groups . Mark has toured throughout the United States and Europe as a member of various orchestras and chamber ensembles .
