One grateful family

FOUNDATION NEWS room , this was one of the largest pulmonary embolisms they had ever seen . The survival rate for an incident like this is typically less than one percent .
Maggie was placed in a medical coma for a few days following the surgery . She was provided medication to thin her blood and help her body fight infection .
When she awakened , the first thing Maggie said was that she needed to feed her baby . Although the medications she was on prevented her from being able to breastfeed , the hospital staff were incredibly accommodating , bringing her newborn to her . Maggie said they would prop her up , lay London on her chest , and mother and baby would be able to have skin-to-skin contact .
Although Maggie was in a different part of the hospital , the staff at Andrews Women ’ s Hospital made sure that baby London had what she needed . In addition to time with her mother and ‘ lovies ’ that had Maggie ’ s scent on them , London also had her father close by .
The staff recognized just how distraught Rick was and provided him with a room at Andrews to spend the night ( although he didn ’ t sleep much ) to be close to both his wife and his newborn daughter .
Not only did the hospital care for the physical and emotional needs of Maggie , Rick and baby London during this critical time in their family ’ s life , pastoral care was also there caring for them , as well as the extended family , including both sets of grandparents . In addition to stopping in and praying for them , the team supported big sister Parker , who didn ’ t fully understand what was happening . Although she knew something was wrong when she saw her dad upset , the Andrews Women ’ s Hospital chaplain took Parker down the hallway and kept her busy playing games while allowing the family to talk and make decisions .
Parker also got to know the Child Life therapist at Baylor Scott & White All Saints . The therapist spent time with Parker to help her understand , as best as possible , why her mom couldn ’ t do much or move around very well . “ Not only did I have a C-section ,” says Maggie , “ I had open heart surgery .”
In addition to these resources for her family , Maggie participated in cardiac rehabilitation at the Carter Rehab and Fitness Center located on Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth campus . Because of COVID restrictions , she was only able to
Maggie Dunlap and her daughter , London , and her father , Walt Hill , after Maggie suffered a pulmonary embolism
participate in eight weeks of rehab , but by the time she left , Maggie was flipping tires down the hallway .
These days , she gets her exercise at home on her stationary bike and chasing London and Parker around . The best news of all ? Maggie and Rick are expecting their third child , a boy , in July 2021 . After years of infertility and IVF , baby boy Dunlap comes as a surprise blessing .
Since their experience at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth , Maggie and Rick have continued to be involved , personally meeting with and thanking the teams that saved Maggie ’ s life and making gifts to the Foundation in support of the Andrews Women ’ s Hospital ’ s simulation lab .
Designed to provide immersive learning experiences for nurses and practitioners , the simulation lab creates handson scenarios that mimic various clinical situations , allowing teams to “ practice ” critical thinking , clinical decision-making and skills needed during real-life scenarios . Recognizing the training and instinct with which the team moved to ensure a safe outcome for Maggie , the Dunlap family is providing support for upgrades to the simulation lab to ensure it remains an integral part of training so our staff can help other patients like Maggie .
