SPECIAL EVENT

Beyond the Bag 2021

hen the Foundation and the Beyond the Bag Committee began planning for the 10th anniversary fundraising event , little did we know we would continue to be in a pandemic — a pandemic that was creating uncertainty and fear — similar to the feelings a person experiences when they are told they have cancer .
However , we soon recognized that despite the disruption created by COVID-19 , the services of the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center continued to be necessary . Patient and family members still needed education , counseling and comfort . And through philanthropy , because of the generosity of individuals like you , the Center ’ s nurses and navigators continued to meet , navigate and support patients , both virtually and inperson , walking with them through their cancer journey .
Knowing that COVID-19 didn ’ t stop cancer was just one of the many reasons the Foundation and the committee were motivated to make this the best virtual event in town !
Held virtually on Saturday , January 23 , 2021 , the 10th Annual Beyond the Bag raised a record $ 330,000 to support the General Cancer Navigator Endowment , ensuring that the life-changing services of the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center will be here forever … even through future pandemics .
Beyond the Bag sponsors and guests were treated to an engaging evening with co-hosts WFAA TV personality Paige McCoy Smith and Baylor Scott & White All Saints Health Foundation President Amy Adkins , as they kept the evening missionfocused and fun .
Viewers enjoyed poignant interviews with Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center staff , donors and survivors . An interactive ‘ zoom room ’ featured live , in-home visits from this year ’ s event chair Lara Newman and her husband , Jim ; the Center namesake and legendary supporters Joan and Howard Katz ; and the man behind the concept of the Center itself , Dr . Alan Johns , and his wife , Jenny .
A final highlight of the evening was the Lexus Raffle drawing . Congratulations to Lexus winner , Kimberly Conley , whose name was drawn for the 2021 Lexus IS donated by the DFW Lexus Dealers .
In addition to patient navigation , services offered by the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center include education , genetic testing , patient support groups , nutritional and wellness classes , and 24-hour access to emotional support . The Center also relies on volunteers , many of whom are cancer survivors , to provide hope and help to cancer patients and their families .
Thank you to each guest , sponsor and donor – you have made this possible .

“ Sharing the Hope ” with cancer patients

In 2018 , the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center expanded its services to guide patients with all cancers through the labyrinth of a cancer diagnosis .
At the same time , the Foundation embarked on a $ 2 million campaign , “ Sharing the Hope ,” to endow a new general cancer navigator position . This campaign has been supported through the generosity of many individuals , companies and foundations , as well as funds from the 2020 and 2021 Beyond the Bag events , to continue providing all non-medical services free to all patients , regardless of their cancer diagnosis .
We are excited to share with you a photo of the newest donor recognition wall , installed in the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center , honoring the generosity of donors with gifts of $ 10,000 or greater toward the General Cancer Navigator Endowment .
Thank you for partnering with us to share the hope with others .
