Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth continually looks for innovative ways to address the physical , emotional and psychological pressures of being in the hospital . Therapy dogs in the hospital setting have become a way to alleviate stress , anxiety and pain , so we are on a journey to bring animal-assisted therapy to our campus .
Specifically , we are partnering with Canine Companions for Independence ( CCI ) to secure a trained facility dog for our campus . The trained skills of a facility dog can enhance therapies , promote participation and reduce anxiety . A pet handler can also integrate a facility dog into structured therapies and facilitate social interactions .
At eight weeks of age , Canine Companions puppies are placed with volunteers who raise them in their homes for the next 14 – 18 months and provide lots of care , love , socialization and basic obedience training . Once the dogs are fully grown , they return to the Canine Companions facility for professional training to learn advanced commands and tasks .
Funds from the 2023 Beyond the Bag will support the addition of a facility dog and full-time pet handler to the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center .
