New FitSteps for Life ® Program

his past August , Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth opened a FitSteps for Life center to provide patients with cancer and other chronic conditions , such as liver disease , access to a personalized exercise program , free of charge . This medically supervised program delivers immediate and long-term benefits to patients , both physically and emotionally . The program was initially designed for cancer patients ; however , more recently patients with liver disease were added to the program .
Clinical Exercise Specialists work directly with each patient to prescribe appropriate exercises based on their diagnosis and physical capabilities . Exercise prescriptions include aerobic exercise , resistance training and core strengthening along with upper and lower body stretching techniques . Monitoring of metrics during exercise ensures a safe environment for patients .
The benefits of exercise for this population include a longer survival rate , reduced fatigue and depression , improved heart function and an enhanced immune system .
Grants from the Cancer Foundation for Life and the Mary Potishman Lard Trust made this program possible for patients with cancer and chronic diseases .
