The Healing Power of Music
The Arts in Medicine program integrates music to promote healing and enhance the lives of our patients , visitors and caregivers . s the daughter of parents who met in music school , it was inevitable that Elise Hawkes would grow up with a love of music . However , it wasn ’ t until she was introduced to the music therapy program at Southern Methodist University that she realized she could make a career out of her passion . As a field of study , music therapy programs were established in the 1940s . For Elise , it is the best of both worlds and the marriage of her interests and vocation . Elise is a boardcertified music therapist with a bachelor ’ s degree and has completed an intense 1,200-hour clinical internship . As an evidence-based program that supports the mind and body , music therapy provides opportunities for bonding between the clinician and the patient . Used as an intervention , music therapy can enhance mood , promote relaxation and reduce anxiety .

As the first music therapist at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth , Elise spends her days working with patients in the critical care and palliative care units . She has worked with 70 patients ( not including repeat sessions ) since starting her position in September . Most of the patients she works with are on a broad continuum , ranging from unresponsive and withdrawn to highly agitated and confused . Elise also uses music therapy to help patients with pain management , teaching patients specific tools and methods to manage their pain .
Referrals for Elise to visit patients come from all types of healthcare professionals , including physicians , social workers and nurses . Elise conducts staff education and in-service training to educate teams
