I am a senior associate in Dee, Netto, Fatimah & Ng, a law firm based in
Kuala Lumpur. I also hold a position at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee
as Sports Chairperson. I’m a people person. I really enjoy meeting new
people and also working with a lot different types of individuals! I
believe this greatly adds color to one’s personality. I don’t believe in
being dull but neither do I want to come off someone who will not take
things seriously – it’s really all about balance.
It is always good to have someone who inspires you. At the moment, I
look to my seniors in the firm, Alex Anton Netto and Choo Dee Wei. Both
of whom have been great mentors and inspiration in my career so far. I
also draw inspiration from prominent figures in the modern world like
Elon Musk, Jack Ma and Mark Cuban.
Transitioning from university life to work life was difficult for me, mainly
because of the situational change of circumstances that occurred to me.
In my university life, everything was ideal and if you encountered a
particular problem, you would be given a limited set of tools to solve the
same. However, in the real world, there are so many variables that we
can’t control. Over the years, I learned to adapt and it’s slowly becoming
easier for me each and every day.
Skills of a Lawyer
Grit, emotional intelligence and humility. I would say that not all of
millennials who currently study law have it, at least not yet. These
skills/values are something which cannot be taught overnight and
definitely something us millennials must strive to have.
What I Do and Why I Do it
I believe it’s the passion for law and the desire to learn that kept me
going. Every day I am learning something new – whether it be a point of
law or certain way of presenting an argument the Judge or even
something as small as keeping my files organized. I am in my fourth year
in practice and I am still learning everyday.
DNFN is quite different from your traditional law firm. As it is a small and
relatively new firm, the work culture here is akin to start-up in Malaysia.
However, the fact that we are a small firm by no means represent that
we do not strive to achieve big feats, which brings me to my next point
regarding True Fitness.
