Dean of Many Hats
Anyone familiar with Jane Carreiro, DO ’88 would agree that she’s been smashing glass ceilings for years. In the fall of 2016, she became dean of her alma mater in part for her long-time advocacy for osteopathic medical education.
This year, Jane Carreiro, DO ’88, vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE COM), is the new chair-elect of the Board of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).
She has been an active member of AACOM, tirelessly championing osteopathic medicine in political spheres across the globe. “I look forward to working with my colleagues at AACOM, and our partners in the house of medicine, as we address the challenges facing our health care system, our current and future physician workforce, and, most importantly, our patients,” she says.
Only a few months later, she was appointed to the Coalition for Physician Accountability, a national organization responsible for addressing issues related to physician education and practice.
“Medical science and societal forces are constantly evolving,” she says, “and the medical community needs to meet those changes with informed and thoughtful responses.” As UNE COM makes plans for our move to the Portland Campus, we are lucky to have someone at the helm who understands the need for adaptability and who will help us be at the forefront as necessary change agents.
