2LT LISA O'KANE, DO '20 (UNITED STATES ARMY)

I commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant shortly after starting medical school under the Health Professions Scholarship Program. In a few short weeks, I will be promoted to Captain in the Army Medical Corps.

The Army has afforded me several unique experiences throughout medical school. During the summer of 1st year, I was able to attend the Basic Officers Leadership Course with five of my classmates. We were able to learn about the Army and Medical Corps, while also doing extensive physical training. We did ruck and Battalion marches, obstacle courses with patients under simulated battle conditions, and set up different levels of combat hospitals under battle conditions. I was also able to start my third year clinical training early with a pediatric rotation at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, where I saw first-hand how military hospitals function and participated directly in the care of our service members and their families. My audition rotations in the beginning of 4th year took me all over the country from Hawaii to Georgia. These rotations again allowed me to participate directly in the care of our service members. They also gave me the opportunity to meet the amazing health professionals who sacrifice every day to keep our Soldiers safe. They inspired me to continue to work hard so that I can have the honor of caring for our Soldiers on the battlefield and at home.

I was able to match into an Army Sponsored Civilian Residency in General Surgery. I am so excited to begin the next stage of my surgical military career and I can only imagine the adventures that await me!
