The Maine Osteopathic Association Mid-Winter Symposium Annual Research & Scholarship Forum took place on February 7, 2020. COM students from all four classes participated in the event by presenting their research posters to an incredible array of volunteer judges. The event would not be possible without them or the incredible students who continue to astound us with their interest and commitment to research. A Special recognition goes out to Dr. Carol Brenner, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, and the rest of her team for organizing the event.

At the end of the evening, three posters were selected as the award winners for Medical Student Original Research. Matthew Postolowski, OMS-II and Roshan Patel, OMS-II took first place for their poster, “A Qualitative Study on Overcoming Communication Barriers Through a Patient-Centered Approach to Individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD),” supervised by Stacey Thieme, DO; second place went to Joanna Sajdlowska, OMS-II for her research, “Parent Perspectives: Strategies to Promote Developmental Screening, Referral to Early Intervention, and Service Provision across the Care Continuum,” supervised by Thyde Maeterlinck Dumont-Mathieu, MD, MPH; third place was awarded to 2LT Matthew Kilroe, OMS-II, Michael Doyle, OMS-II, 2LT Kristofer Andren, OMS-II, Brett Armstrong, MPH, OMS-II, Ethan Collins, OMS-II, Maitland Wiren, OMS-II, and ENS Dean Cataldo, OMS-III for their poster, “Risk-based Assessment of the Opioid Crisis in Maine Utilizing Geographic Information Systems, a Civil-military Approach,” supervised by COL William Bograkos, MA, DO, FAOAAM, FACOEP, FACOFP (ret.).
