UNE COM ALUMNA ELECTED AMWA PRESIDENT
The American Medical Women's Association elected new leadership at their annual meeting in March 2019. UNE COM alumna, Roberta Gebhard, DO '86 is the current President and Dr. Nicole Sandhu is President-Elect.
Dr. Gebhard is the first osteopathic physician to be president of the Association. She has been an active member of AMWA, starting the Gender Equity Task Force (GETF) in 2010. The task force published the article, “Workplace Bullying Among Family Physicians: A Gender Focused Study," which was awarded the 2018 Giambalvo Scholarship for highlighting existing barriers for women in medicine. For her advocacy of gender equity, and empowering women throughout the world, she was awarded the AMWA Commitment to Excellence Award in 2014, and the Bertha Van Hoosen Award in 2015. Learn more.
As president, AMSA hosted the Centennial Congress of the Medical Women's International Association in New York City. The incomparable Gloria Steinem was the keynote speaker. Her address emphasized the theme of the conference, “Medical Women- Ambassadors of Change in a Challenging Global World.”
