What were some of your big takeaways from the experience?
My time that I have spent with the beautiful communities of Honduras has taught me that simple acts of care and love are worth more to those in great need than any material item. I saw first-hand, families who lacked access to some of the basic necessities to human life, clean water and health care; essentials common to the reality of many individuals living above the poverty line in the United States that are not thought twice about. I recognize that these limitations not only occur in developing countries, but are a reality for many in this country who are homeless and/or living below the poverty line. Thus, a medical service trip like this can act to strengthen one’s cultural sensitivity and compassion for other human beings. Above all, each visit has had a profound humbling effect on me; each mission reminds me that it is a privilege to be invited into a patient’s life, be trusted by them, and to hold the responsibility for their health in your own hands.
Why do you think medical missions are important? How would you recommend the experience to other students?
Medical service trips are experiences that can provide valuable things for both parties in a reciprocal fashion. For those who volunteer to give their time, we demonstrate to those communities that we care both about their health and well-being. By offering quality encounters with each family or individual who walks into our clinic, we acknowledge their dignity and place value on whatever the condition or circumstance the patient might be experiencing. Likewise, the humbleness one can feel after attending a program like this is incomparable. If someone feels called and has the heart for applying their time and skills globally, Action for Education will be happy to have you. Our website can provide more information about how to donate to the organization, support students in our school, and answer questions about the medical missions that we conduct. These excursions teach you about the value behind teamwork, challenging yourself to step outside of your comfort zone, and can solidify different dreams one may have about potential future careers in health care.
