Last fall, UNE COM students and alumni participated in a medical mission to Uganda with the Waves of Health (WOH) organization. The team provided medical and pharmacy care to hundreds within the community. Chris Boni, DO, is the current President, Assistant Clinical Professor at UNE COM, and chief of the Internal Medicine rotation at our clinical site in Newark, NJ. To Dr. Boni, medical missions are important for three reasons: “To get out to the world and realize how lucky we are; to practice clinical medicine without relying on tests and labs; and to help people just to help them, not because it is our job and we are concerned about quality metrics.”

Alumna, Kate Hanify, DO ‘04, helped start the mission trips in 2007-8. Since its inception, numerous UNE COM alumni have been involved including Drs. Hugo Raposo, '18, Jess Andrade, ‘18, Amy Paige, ‘18, John Charlie Mach, ‘18, Hope Barone, '18, and Zoe Waldman, ‘17. To further punctuate UNE COM’s involvement, Daniel Sheps, DO ‘10 is on WOH’s board of directors. WOH will return to Uganda in January 2020.

Waves of Health (WOH)

"This experience arguably taught me more about practicing medicine in one week than any amount of studying could have. It opens your eyes to the issues of health care, not just domestically but on a global scale."

COM students and alumni continually volunteer their time and expertise abroad. Learn more about recent experiences and expeditions to Panama, Honduras, Uganda, and Guyana, as well as opportunities to get involved!
