Growing Diversity at UNE COM
On the national level, there is a visible, strategic push towards diversity and inclusion within higher education. Medical schools seem to grasp that this trend isn’t merely a progressive necessity, but comes from a place of holistic care and health. According to the International Journal of Medical Education, “Cultural competence (CC) among health professionals is viewed as one strategy to ensure equal access to healthcare across diverse groups and to ensure that patients receive care appropriate to their needs. However, many physicians are insufficiently prepared to meet the needs of increasingly diverse populations.”1 At UNE COM, leading the way are bright, impassioned medical students eager to transform their school into a place of civility and cultural humility. Fostering a culture of dignity and respect within the community will help them become better, proficient doctors.
