INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG B. KUSHNIR, DO ‘00

Spotlight Story

Perseverance & Persistence: The Making of a DO

It is too easy, learning, working or teaching at a medical school, to become enthralled by the experience of education: the embodiment of curricular complexities compressed in time and space; the imparting of knowledge and ethos; and the optimistic promise of young, eager minds. Our students often amaze us in their paths to discovery, and remind us that they are what make UNE COM both UNique and COMplete. When they graduate, they remain our students in memory, much like how we remain children to our parents even as we age. As alumni, our students (now physicians) embark on new paths that take them to vast, invigorating places. Since 1982, the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine has continuously graduated doctors of osteopathic medicine and boasts over 3,700 physicians nationwide. This is the story of one such physician—an anecdotal account of the making of a DO.

I connected with Craig B. Kushnir, DO ’00 after reading a feature article in the South Florida Sun Sentinel about his promotion to Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Bethesda. I was curious to know how his experience at UNE COM influenced where he was today.
