A Look at Current COM Students In Action

September saw the inaugural inception of the UNE COM Wine Tasting and Fundraiser on Friday, September 21st at the Harold Alfond Forum. The incomparable Meghan Jastrzembski, OMS-II dreamed the concept of the event, which the Student Government Association Social Committee helped execute. Meghan wanted an event to bring the larger COM community together, where first and second-year students could interact with one another, faculty, and staff, in an environment not centered on academics. More importantly, the student body was looking to have an event to raise money for a scholarship in Deane Kenny Stryker’s name, a first-year student who, Meghan stated, “left our community and world far too early, but not without making an indelible impression on all those who came within her orbit.”

In order to do the event justice, the dress was “country club chic” or “snappy casual.” UNE’s caterer, Sodexo, did a phenomenal job creatively executing the menu, which included 6 distinct wine and food stations: an Italian red wine with beets, goat cheese, walnuts and honey; French white wine with seared tuna, dashi broth, fried garlic, and green onion; Californian white wine with pork belly, fennel confit, and blood orange gastric; Argentinian red wine with braised short rib, parsnip puree and red onion jam; local Kombucha with sweet and yukon potato latke, chive crème fraiche and caviar; and finally Italian sparkling wine with an assortment of chocolate truffles and strawberries.

The evening was a great success; students raised $8800 to go toward the scholarship in honor of Deane. The SGA hopes to make this an annual event where alumni and third and fourth-year students may be able to participate in the future.
