STUDENT POETRY
Breath
by Devon Doornbos
Rarely we recognize
The feat we complete
Every few ticks.
We barely realize
It’s happening. Subtle,
Like the beat of the heart,
Not by hiding, but by
Presiding, constantly.
We can’t but ignore it.
We lack the time to
Guide it so we let it take
Care of itself and we
Don’t notice it until
Something comes and throws
Off its rhythm then
We pause. Slow down.
Fill lungs with fresh air.
Move on. Nothing’s wrong.
Why would it ever stop?
