CLINICAL SIGNS OF FKS:

metabolic acidosis

chloride is normal

kidney function is normal

no dehydration

increased anion, but not identified

The Silver Lining: FKS is a serious disease. It has caused a lot of loss in the goat community. However, a treatment has been found. It's pretty easy. The answer is BAKING SODA. People have found that within 2 hours of administration of baking soda, floppy kids have perked up and recovered completely.

Dr. Smith encourages you to share all of the information in this article with your vet. Because FKS and the treatment of it is so new, your vet may not have heard about it. Dr. Smith also recommends that if you cannot reach your vet and you're pretty sure that you have FKS, you can administer 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda orally in cold water. If it's FKS, you should see distinct improvement in 2 hours. If you don't, you need to explore other possible problems. There are many diseases which exhibit similar symptoms.

Disclaimer: This treatment is not recommended by Cornell University and people who try this method do so without the recommendation of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Goat Trivia

The ancient Egyptian pharaoh Cephranes was buried with more than 2,000 goats.

The U.S.A. is the largest importer of goats in the world. Australia is the largest exporter.

Super Easy Goat Cheese

There are many ways to make goat cheese. If you are short on time and supplies, here is a tasty one to try.

Ingredients:

milk

1/4 c. lemon juice

1/2 clove fresh, rated garlic

course salt

herbs of your choice

Fill a medium saucepan with milk. Heat gradually until it reaches 180 degrees F. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice. Wait about 30 seconds for curdles to form.

Place a collander over a large bowl. Line the colander with several layers of cheesecloth. Gently ladel milk into the colander. Tie the ends of the cheesecloth together and hang over the bowl. (I use a wooden spoon to keep it suspended). Let whey drip for about 90 minutes or until cheese inside resembles a soft ricotta.

Remove from the cheesecloth and set into a bowl. Gently fold in the salt and herbs. Serve immediately or store up to 2 or 3 days.
