Shaping Identity in the Face of Life’ s Changes
Sinefin TEKİN ‣
Throughout our lives, we experience many changes that interact with and shape our identity. As we are sculpted by the relentless artist called life, certain major experiences can completely transform our perspectives. Some people believe these changes happen for a greater purpose, eventually leading to a better course of events. However, others cope with change by convincing themselves that nothing will improve and that they simply have to adapt to these moments of transformation. Beyond this dichotomy, there are also individuals who refuse to be passively shaped by life; instead, they take control of change. They choose to have a voice in the journey they take, even as life presents its challenges.
From the moment a child takes their first breath on Earth, parents carry the responsibility of guiding them on the path to becoming an individual. They prepare the child for the challenges ahead rather than placing them on a bed of roses. The values taught by parents become increasingly significant as a person engages more deeply with life. Moreover, it is essential for parents to introduce the moral principles they believe in without imposing them. Even this careful guidance influences a child’ s identity, as children are inherently sensitive and impressionable. During the ongoing transformation of one’ s identity, family members and the immediate social circle have a profound impact, regardless of how large or small their roles may seem. They shape and transform the individual into the person they become as a functioning adult.
