The Impact of Technology and Popular Culture on Local Culture
and Human Self in Modern Times
Çınar BİTER ‣
In modern times, popular culture and social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram are rapidly changing individuals’ perceptions of themselves and the local culture. Before the common use of social media, the human self was shaped by family, and culture. However, today, social media and popular culture have replaced these things. This change has changed how identity is formed and expressed in society.
Social media allows individuals to present themselves in the identity they desire. Through shared photos and thoughts, people can introduce themselves and connect with others. This supports the free expression of ideas. However, it also makes a difference between fake and real identity. The desire for likes and acceptance.
One factor in identity change or presenting one’ s self differently is social pressure. The constant portrayal of“ perfect” lives in popular culture and social media can lead to fear of rejection, especially among young people.
At the same time, popular culture has a very significant impact on identity formation. Fashion, television series, and social media trends reach large audiences in seconds, changing people’ s lifestyles. One positive effect of this is that local cultures can reach national or even global audiences through popular culture. So, local cultures that might be forgotten in a short time will never be forgotten.
However, local cultures that spread so rapidly can lose their unique characteristics and become distant from their original meanings. This can lead to the homogenization of cultures and reduce diversity
In conclusion, while identity is rapidly changing nowadays, local cultures can reach the general public. However, while reaching, they may lose their own unique characteristics. Using technology consciously is important for both preserving individual identity and cultural diversity.
