Transformation and the Two Sides of Technology
Orhan Alp YILDIZ ‣
Transformation is an inevitable part of life. Just as societies, individuals, and ideas evolve over time, technology continues to transform the way people live, learn, and communicate. In today’ s world, online technology has become an essential standard. For example, students can access millions of books, articles, and educational videos within seconds, making learning more interactive, flexible, and global. However, an important question remains: is this transformation an Autobot, representing progress and benefit, or an Optimus Crime, symbolizing harm and danger?
On the positive side, technology offers countless advantages. It connects people across the world, provides instant access to information, and supports education, communication, and innovation. Nevertheless, technology also has significant drawbacks. Excessive use of digital devices can damage social relationships by reducing face-to-face interaction and increasing dependence on screens. Although people may feel connected through their computers and smartphones, this connection can sometimes be superficial and isolating.
A popular term that emerged in 2024 is“ brain rot.” This term refers to the negative effects of excessive screen time, such as weakened social skills, reduced attention span, and pessimistic thinking. As a result, individuals may become isolated from real life, almost as if the outside world were dangerous or inaccessible.
Many parents focus only on these negative effects and choose to ban technology altogether. However, this approach often ignores the fact that technology is now an unavoidable part of modern life. Moreover, in fields such as medicine, smart technologies save lives every day through advanced monitoring systems and innovative treatments. As Ultron states in Avengers: Age of Ultron,“ You want to protect the world, but you don’ t want it to change. How is humanity allowed to be safe if it is not allowed to improve?”
In conclusion, transformation is not as simple as turning into a vehicle like an Autobot. It does not always lead to positive outcomes. Ultimately, whether technological transformation is beneficial or harmful depends on how consciously and responsibly people choose to use it.
