The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on Society

Kaan ALTIN ‣
AI systems have been part of our lives for a long time. During World War II, radar and missile systems worked together— radar detected enemies, informed soldiers, and guided missiles. This early system can be seen as a form of artificial intelligence. Fast forward to the 21st century: in 2020, ChatGPT introduced AI to the public, changing everything. Many people were unaware of it at first, but by 2026, AI had become a major force. When combined with robotics, AI offers remarkable possibilities, such as surgeons with steady hands or potential cancer solutions.
In education, AI can address global learning gaps. It can provide free, accessible education, assist people with disabilities, and explain lessons clearly for deaf students. Even small AI support can enhance creativity and awareness. However, the system has largely prioritized profit over public benefit. Soon after AI gained popularity, premium packages and subscription models limited free access, harming educational opportunities. Many students now rely on AI to complete homework, prioritizing convenience over real learning. These risks making them less prepared for the future, reducing creativity and critical thinking. Awareness is essential. AI should be a supportive tool, not a replacement for personal effort. Used properly, it can enhance learning and creativity without undermining human initiative.
Personally, I use AI only as support, which is how it should ideally be used. By balancing AI assistance with individual effort, we can ensure it improves our lives rather than limiting our potential.
