Change is Here-And So are We
Münife Burcu HAVUR ‣
The environment around us is undergoing a transformation, and it is not a positive one. Our ecosystems are changing, Antarctica is melting and sea levels are rising. None of these are changes for the better. The global average temperature has increased by 1. 2 ° C since pre-industrial times and atmospheric CO2 levels are higher than they have been in the last 800,000 years. This shift is not due to natural causes; humanity is the primary driver of climate change, which suggests that recent efforts, such as the UN Climate Conferences, have not been enough to change our current course.
One reason we still struggle to create meaningful change is the belief that this is a problem for the distant future; this public apathy has stalled significant progress. But it’ s not true. We must take a stand against companies that harm the environment, as corporations have a significantly higher impact on our planet than average citizens. Passing stricter laws that protect the environment against corporate interests would be a major step forward, especially since many current regulations fail to preserve the safety of our planet.
While individual actions are important, they are not enough. Systemic change is crucial if we want to preserve our world. Joining climate activism organizations and becoming an advocate for a sustainable future is essential for everyone. We must ensure that we are not the generation that stayed silent.
As former U. S. President Barack Obama said:“ We’ re the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last one who can do something about it.”
