An Innovative Method For Treatment of Mental Disorders: Stem Cell Therapy
Efsun Neva ALTIPARMAK
Technology has been playing a vital role in the enhancement of the mental well-being of humans for over a few decades. As mental health becomes an increasingly important global priority, medical innovations are being developed continuously providing a more inclusive and diverse approach towards it. These innovations have resulted in a better understanding of mental disorders while fostering new treatment methods. One of the major innovations regarding mental health is the usage of stem cell therapy for the treatment of mental disorders.
Basics of Stem Cell Therapy Stem cells can be defined as unspecialized, blank cells that have not developed for a specific function yet. When proper conditions are provided, they develop into organs and tissues. For example, embryonic stem cells which exist during the early stages of embryonic development, later form 200 different types of cells. Therefore, stem cells are referred to as the building blocks of specialized cells, tissues, and organs of the human body. The method of repairing the existing diseased or dysfunctional cells with the usage of stem cells is named as Stem Cell Therapy or in short SCT. This method is used for the treatment of many diseases including cancer, Parkinson’ s, anaemias, sickle cell disease, and Krabbe disease. The success rate of SCT, which varies from disease to disease,
