Technological Innovations in Environmental Sustainability and Combating Climate Change

Zelal Derin TEKİN

Ever since the twenty-first century, technology has become the bane of our existence. It has been improving our lives daily in an immense number of areas such as healthcare, medicine, space exploration, environmental sustainability, and climate change. Out of all these critical areas in this article I would like to focus on environmental sustainability and combating climate change.
Environmental sustainability has been our goal ever since we learned about global warming and climate change. Efforts have been made to combat climate change, however many of these efforts have been unsuccessful. Climate change is a global problem that we have all been combating all over the world from deforestation to rising sea levels due to the melting of icebergs. There are some new projects to combat these challenges and one of them has stood out for me. The project is called“ re-iceberg-isation” and a team of Indonesian designers led by Faris Rajak Kotahatuhaha has operated the project. This project proposes re-freezing sea water in the arctic to build a miniature iceberg using submarine-like vessels. This team believes that the rising sea levels due to melting ice should not only be responded to with defensive solutions like building floating cities but should be met with offensive solutions like re-freezing sea water that has melted, then re-shaping these ice blocks to create ice fields to balance the polar ecosystem. Their main goal is to restore the polar ecosystem which has a direct impact on global warming and climate change.
Projects like these showcase how technological improvements like these will help us to reach our goal of environmental sustainability and combat climate change. We must support these kinds of innovative projects to prove we have learned from our past mistakes and are doing everything that we can to achieve environmental sustainability. There is no doubt that in the future we will see projects like these come to life and finally highlight how important technology is in global warming and environmental sustainability.
