The Essence of Innovation

Dora ÇETİNDOĞAN

“ The world at your fingertips!”“ Connecting people!”“ Technology that brings life to you!”— these slogans all serve one purpose: to define innovation. For decades, we have heard the word innovation used to describe the new. And for the same decades, these“ innovations” have largely been technological devices. This has led to the common belief that innovation belongs solely to technology.
If we take a closer look, innovation means introducing something new— a new idea, a new method, or a new way of doing things. In our era, technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate. With its help, fields such as medicine, law, and astronomy have expanded their reach and evolved for the better. In medicine, new lab devices and methods have transformed diagnostics and treatments. In astronomy, powerful telescopes and satellites have allowed us to explore the universe and deepen our understanding of existence. Another groundbreaking innovation has risen to prominence since 2021— artificial intelligence. Even technology itself is evolving with the help of AI.
Yes, these innovations are useful. Yes, they solve problems and make our lives easier. But innovation is not limited to technology. It is present in our cultures, our lives, and within ourselves. We invented the first wheel. We shaped our societies and created art. We built the light bulb. We developed AI.
We are innovation. Because the true essence of innovation is humanity.
