Helen Adams Keller ( June 27 , 1880 – June 1 , 1968 ) was an American author , disability rights advocate , political activist , and lecturer . Born in West Tuscumbia , Alabama , she lost her sight and hearing because of an illness when she was only 19 months .
Her father Arthur was a journalist and her mother Kate , took care of the house and the baby Helen . And they did everything they could to cure Helen yet it didn ’ t help . Unfortunately , Helen continued with her life as visually impaired and hearing impaired .
Helen was a clever and sensitive child . She was able to use her senses of smell and touch . Moreover , she could understand what objects were . Besides , she developed sign language to communicate with people . After a while , her parents hired a teacher named Anne Sullivan for Helen ’ s education . Sullivan educated Helen until the end of her life and never left her alone . Sullivan managed to control Helen ’ s misbehavior in a short time with determined methods .
She taught her the names of objects and drew them on her hand . After the education adventure of Helen Keller and her teacher , she successfully graduated from the university and became the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree .
Helen Keller was interested in life events and wrote books about what happened . Her articles and books were published in various magazines and newspapers .
There are also books and movies about Helen Keller ’ s struggle for her life . One of Helen Keller ’ s biggest goals was to be able to speak like other people . But despite her great efforts , she couldn ’ t achieve her goal completely . Helen Keller died in 1968 at the age of 88 and many people attended her funeral .
