Embracing the Physical and Mental Disabilities
Eren NOYAN
What are physical and mental disabilities ? The term “ physical or mental disability ” includes such diseases and conditions related to the body or the mind , so how do physical and mental disabilities affect us ?
Firstly , the reality is that whether the condition is an injury , a physical or mental illness , living with a disability fundamentally shapes your life experiences . However , accepting and even embracing one ’ s disability as a facet of one ’ s identity doesn ’ t mean submitting to a defeatist mindset . It is possible to replace your experiences with injury and illness with a healthy mindset of yourself , enabling your disability to shape who you are .
Secondly , there are also negative effects in society . When you have physical or mental disabilities you can have hard times like people who don ’ t understand how normal it is that having disabilities . There is a significant body of evidence showing that persons with disabilities are at an increased risk for suicide or suicidal ideation . However , the evidence also shows that it is not the disabling condition that most often leading to suicidal impulses . Nevertheless , it ’ s the social constraints that so many people with disabilities regularly face that can lead to life-threatening depression .
To conclude , as evidence , research demonstrates people with disabilities bump into huge challenges compared to “ normal ” humans . This includes barriers that are both structural and ideological , from limited access to public transportation or curbside cutouts for wheelchair-users to the lack of flexible work options for persons who might need it .
