The Pupa of Butterfly

Alanur Heper

Obstacle is defined as “ something that blocks you so that movement or action is prevented ” by the Cambridge dictionary . Racial , social , cultural difficulties can be regarded as the obstacles we mostly encounter within our lives . However , these obstacles simply work like the pupa of butterfly . Pupa is the stage of the caterpillar where it grows and prepares itself to become an impressive , fully-grown butterfly . Although it restricts the caterpillar ’ s movement for some time , the outcome is beautiful and unique . Confronting the obstacles and paving the way for success can be visualized with this metaphor .
Nelson Mandela ’ s situation portrays a very significant example for the difficulties that can lead to remarkable consequences . Mandela is known for his protest against the racist laws in South Africa . He also contributed to “ Freedom Charter ”, which defends inclusive social democracy that doesn ’ t discriminate people according to their ethnic backgrounds . Due to his activism , he was eventually imprisoned for life in 1962 . In 1990 after his release , he became South Africa ’ s first Black president . He also won the Nobel Peace Price in 1993 . He became one of the most respected figures for human right activists universally . His fight against racial segregation , social inequalities , and cultural prejudices , resulted in providing and conserving the rights for people from different ethnic minorities in South Africa . This also constituted an example for many countries all around the world .
As we can observe through Nelson Mandela ’ s example , racial , social , and cultural obstacles we may encounter along the way can sometimes be the best way to broaden horizons or move beyond the barriers of societal biases . Hence , we should regard these obstacles as steppingstones . We should keep stepping from one to another and carry on the path that will bring us into somewhere better eventually .
