Disabled people have been exposed to severe discrimination in every period of history . Even the UK , one of the leading developing countries , has not been able to change its mindset . But why do they have to experience such things ?
It has been shown by many studies that being disabled was associated with Satan among people in Medieval Times . The Malleus Maleficarum , a book by Heinrich Kramer in 1487 , says that disabled children were the product of the mothers ’ relation with Satan1 . We can more or less guess that this mindset continued to develop until this day in many groups . A recent study shows that between 2017-2019 , nineteen percent of rapes or sexual assaults against persons with disabilities were reported to police , compared to 36 % of those against persons without disabilities . The same study reveals that persons with disabilities were victims of 26 % of all nonfatal violent crimes while accounting for about 12 % of the population2 . It is a perfect example of people satisfy themselves by insulting and attacking others . Many countries and governments try to close the gap , but it is not enough . For instance , disabled people can ’ t use public transportation or enter some buildings due to lack of facilities such as ramps , tactical paving etc .
To sum up , the difficulties of living with a disability today are unacceptable . What we have to do is people , especially higher authorities , need to inspire and help each other to raise awareness . We need to unite ; we need to act ; we need to put some pressure on governments to get a result . And most importantly , we MUST remember that we are all human beings . There is no you , me , disabled or non-disabled . There is only us ...
