A digital footprint is a track of data a user creates while surfing on the Internet . It includes all of your online activities , such as emails that you share , websites that you browse and the information you submit while signing up for any online services .
The Internet relies on millions of physical servers in data centers around the world ; all connected by routers , switches , undersea cables that consume a lot of energy .
Most of this energy comes from power sources that emit carbon dioxide into the air when burning fossil fuels , but some research studies show that our online activity emits CO2 as much as global aviation industry .
Lastly , 3.5 million searches performed in one day on the world ’ s most popular website Google , create approximately 40 % of the carbon footprint on the Internet .
We can make small changes in our digital habits for a sustainable world .
