Digital Citizenship

Alp Giray DATLAR

Digital citizenship refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers , the Internet , and digital devices to engage with society on any level . With the Covid Pandemic , digital citizenship become part of everybody ’ s daily life . We are attending our classes online , having social interactions with our friends and relatives online and even visiting museums online ! However , with that easily accessible and fast power comes a big responsibility . There are some principles that we need to stick to while being a digital citizen to be a good one . I am going to explain 3 points to follow in order to become a good digital citizen .
First of all , you need to think critically . Thinking clearly and critically is at the heart of any form of citizenship . There may be a ton of information on the web , but not all of it is accurate . Critical thinking involves teaching students to search what they see online and determine whether they can trust it . For example , many students copy the first information they see online and don ’ t check it . That leads them to learn unreliable and wrong things .
Secondly , you should be careful to protect your privacy . It is unfortunately so easy to come across strangers online . We should never share personal information with any strangers we come across on the Internet . We should keep our passwords secret and post as little personal information as we possibly can .
Last but not least , respect others . Respect for yourself and other people is important in all relationships , and it ’ s no different when you ’ re online . Treat others the way you ’ d want to be treated online . If we treat people badly then that ’ s what we are going to get from other people . Try to be more positive and respectful . Also , respect their personal information and privacy .
To conclude , we all are engaged with digital devices to engage with society especially thanks to this Covid Pandemic . And to be responsible while being a part of digital citizenship , we need to think critically and check the information we see online , protect our safety and privacy and respect and appreciate other digital citizens we interact with . I think that if everyone considers these rules and applies them in their life , all people can be good digital citizens and interact online more comfortably .
