The Adverse Effects Of Digitalization On Our Society

Digitalization is an ongoing process , and judging by the progress up until this moment , a new society centered on the virtual is at our doors . A new , relatively radical level of digitalization is upon us . It is imminent and inevitable for both good and bad . Digitalization has indeed led to many improvements for human society and daily life , with a seemingly infinite amount of information just laying around , ripe for our taking . However , as the line between the real and the virtual gets blurrier , our privacy and the guaranteed truthfulness of all the information that we absorb without question is in danger .
The primary point of concern about the digital age is user privacy . Web services require lots of data from our world , data about us . Data is often sold without users being informed . As personal data gets more valuable in helping businesses present personalized advertisements to their potential customers , businesses will have more and more of an incentive to spy on users . Data that is stored in a digital environment also means that in case of a security breach , information may fall into the hands of ill-intentioned groups .
And while many would think that our ability to access large amounts of information on the internet is beneficial to humanity , it should also be considered that it is nearly impossible to confirm the truthfulness of information at such volumes , causing misinformation , especially harmful during the pandemic that we are going through . The Internet has been a hub of misinformation about COVID-19 , causing great harm and being an impediment to the resolution of this crisis .
All in all , while digitalization is inevitable and has benefits , there are many dangers to it , against which we need increased precautions .
Another point of concern is that the Internet is relatively away from supervision and regulation . The Internet is and will be even more of a nest for crime and violence . The emergence of the dark web is a worrying development , one against which we have few weapons .
