Rights In Cyberspace

Ece DEMİR - Nehir öykü TAŞDAN

We , 21st-century people , use the digital world without knowing the importance of human rights , democracy , and the rule of law in this cyberspace . Our rights can be protected or neglected there . We must be aware of the social legal rights we have especially in this digital unreliable world .
One reason for us to be careful is our right to privacy . Every time we sign in to a new website or download a new application , we accept a privacy policy that we don ’ t usually read and don ’ t know what it consists of . This careless acceptance causes problems later , such as your data being used on other sites , getting scammed while shopping from unsafe websites or getting your photos published without your consent . It ’ s not just our right to privacy being neglected . Social media can also affect our right to freedom of thought . For example , Facebook impacted the results of the 2016 uSA elections and 2018 Brazil elections . The posts and advertisements they recommend can easily manipulate us and our thoughts . According to a study by MIT , fake news on Twitter spreads six times faster than true news . People believing in lies about COVID-19 on social media instead of doctors who are dealing with the virus is a very recent example we can give . unfortunately , people have no idea what ’ s true now . In social media it is very easy to criticize , judge , or insult people and their thoughts . Although it is a crime to neglect the right to freedom of thought , it is very common within this digital world .
Besides these negative effects of the digital world in our lives , we can still get the advantages of it such as using the internet for solving crimes by using footage or any kind of proof from social media . It is very easy to make announcements for missing people . We can also use social networks to express an idea or to oppose an unfair situation and get the public eye on that topic .
In conclusion , in the digital world , our rights can be both safe and in danger . It is our responsibility to keep things in line and keep our rights safe and secure .
