Digital Citizenship and Social Media

Digital Citizenship and social media have become a big part of our society and one that most can ’ t live without , and the definition of social media can vary from person to person .
Think of social media as a giant library , full of books which house every single information one could learn . You ’ d want to spend most of your time in such a place , right ? However , such a place could be dangerous if used wrongly . In order to prevent tragedies , individuals need to know how to use social media properly , and this problem entailed the creation of ‘ Digital Citizenship ’ programs .
How can you avoid these situations ? Digital Citizenship is focused on the usage of social media while eliminating all the dangers it could bring . Digital Citizens protect their real- life identities before engaging in social media in any way . They respect others ’ privacy and their rights online , and even defend them while discouraging illegal actions or actions like cyber-bullying . They contribute to making social media a safer and happier place for all , as it should be . More people should be educated about Digital Citizenship and we can encourage those around us to be a little more cautious on social media .
Basically , Digital Citizenship is education about how to use social media effectively . To understand the importance of Digital Citizenship , we first need to understand the problems that social media can bring . Since its creation , even though it ’ s a virtual world , social media has led to many tragedies such as murders and suicides . This is because some people forget that social media is a virtual world and forget that some rather personal details shouldn ’ t be shared with the rest of the world . As a butterfly effect , first , people would take interest in you . Slowly , your target audience will start to shift and what we call ‘ haters ’ will appear , which will lead to cyber-bullying . In long term cyber-bullying can lead to depression and suicide , or , you know , someone dangerous could catch wind of you . These are worst case scenarios of course , but in other scenarios , you can get cyber-bullied or some people might learn things you wouldn ’ t want them to learn … There are a lot of possibilities .
