A good example of this would be some social media platforms ’ numerous privacy concerns such as the selling of users private information to advertisers and sharing messages or contact details without consent . Some social media platforms had to deal with several lawsuits relating to their shady practices . Another example could be shopping websites coaching the police to get more footage of users without their consent . Some shopping websites are aware of everything that you are buying , browsing and much more which makes it a goldmine for consumer information . Over 30 civil rights organizations have urged these shopping websites to stop working with the police but there has been no response . However , this shouldn ’ t scare us too much because as digital citizens we have ways to limit the info we give away . We can always use services like VPNs and VPSes to protect ourselves . VPNs cut location tracking and IP tracking short , making it safer to browse the Internet .
Technology is constantly changing and growing , no matter how good and helpful it may seem to us there are also negative things that may harm us if we ’ re not careful enough . It is always in good practice to be conscious and be aware of possible dangers online so we can all as a society , create positive and safe digital citizenship globally .
