now that they may force the Spanish cabinet to declare war . Excitement at Madrid is at fever heat and preparations for war are everywhere visible .
If war should come now we should be very well prepared for i ". Our ships are in better condition than they have been for years . Recent inves i- gations s hcw that there are in the United StaLes 10,000,000 men capable of bearing arms . All our coast cities are well detenced and the batteries are being strr ng henr d all the time . While it is to be hoped that war will not come , for war between Spain and our country would probably mean war among all the nations and would involve the desruc ' Ion of billions of dollars worth 01 ' property and the loss of

I hundreds of thousands of lives , still we have the satisfaction of knowing that , in the present prosperous state of our country , we are very well prepared to have war .

The students of the High School do not take sufficient interest in the Libra ry . The periodicals especially are neglected by a majority olf the studen ' s . and Wille of the best periodicals are neg lec . ed al . ogether . The " Outing " and the " Cosmopolt . an " are read more than all of the other periodicals pu ' together ; the former , doubtless , for its ' account of athletics , the latter for its stories , Surely this is not as it shculd be . The student should evince an interest in the happenings of the great wor ld ; and iher e are sta ' ed and rom me !' ' ed uron in a mo ' t attrac i V ~ ar d most wholesome f ' or m in t . he " Cut look ," " Public (' pinion ," " Hr r- per ' s \ VeeklY ," and : he " R view or Reviews ." ThEY should be cs pable of appreciating the review of current literature such as are provided in the " Li ' erary Digest " and the " Book Buy- Er ." The students of Civics should certainly read ' the comments on governmental rr f ' orrns in t l e " Review of Reviews ," the " Outlook ," and " Public C nin ion ." As it is we read up politicpI ' Copies in the per iod icals on lv as We arc r-omr e . Ic d to debate on them in the Seriely and the r-udent body are not sufficiently informrd to appreciate the r ' ebates when produced .
How " Harpr r ' s Round T ' a ' ble " can be neglected is abso . ucelv incompreh ensible , No , periodica 1 can be found that contains so much unique , attractive , and , at the same time , perfectly wholesome ma ter for High School boys and girls as this . Last session this pe rtod lcal was almost fought over as soon as it arrived , and after it had gone the rounds , it usually looked , Ircrn its tattered appearance , as if the stude rr s had tried , and very nearly sue-
