The Comanche Indians Volume 1 | Page 15

The structure of a Comanche band was formed in a quite democratic way. The bands had no actual leaders but several men who were recognized as the most fearful warriors or the wisest thinkers. Because of the nomad lifestyle, the Comanches could never develop agriculture. Therefore, the women usually went gathering plant food while the men went hunting game.

The women would then cook the meals, adequate for the whole family and, eventually the band. Women also had to take care of the children, but according to tradition they were usually helped by the sister of the husband. Also because of the nomad lifestyle, old people were recognized useless after a certain age or physical condition; they were also given the name”old bulls”.
