THe Gill broTHers — Marvin and Coy — hold a photo of the Joe Wheeler steamboat, which now hangs in the Decatur library. The brothers rode on the boat when they were ages 3 and 5. The boat traveled the river delivering goods. Their parents, Ollie Colvier Gill and John Gill lived in Dayton and worked on the Spivy farm. They moved to Scottsboro, Ala., to work on another Spivy cotton plantation. All their household goods were moved on a barge behind the steamboat. The household goods included a cow, two pigs and chickens. When this photo was taken, it had been 79 years since the brothers had ridden on the Joe Wheeler. Coy Gill will be 99 on Feb. 2. His brother Marvin is deceased. Photo courtesy, sHirleY sHADDen hoto courtesy, sHirleY sHADDen J.T. AnD sHirleY Shadden are shown on July 9, J.T. Smith owned Smith’s Store on Ladd Springs Road, just past Moore’s Chapel Methodist Church. Shortly after this phot o was taken, Smith and his son, Ivan, were tragically killed in Polk County at one of the railroad crossings. After that, Calhoun ran a rolling store for Mrs. Smith.
