HARMONY SCHOOL class is shown from 1909. This school was located between North Chatata
Valley Road and Upper River Road. The building was destroyed by fire. A new school was erected on
Union Grove Road and called Crox Harmony. The photo, provided by Dean Beaty, is from the files of C.L.

THE FREEWILL SCHOOL was located on
Freewill Road. it was later consolidated with
Hopewell School. The building was used for a time
as a church. It was the last one-room schoolhouse
in Bradley County. At one time there were more
than 30 one-room schools in the county, according
to information from an article by the late C.L.
McAlister, county historian. A class from the Old
Freewill School is shown on Page 37.

Police, witnesses:
Man climbs highway
sign, stopping traffic
NASHVILLE (AP) — Police and
witnesses say a man climbed atop
a road sign along a major highway and stayed there for two
hours, moving from side to side
and dangling his feet as drivers
below faced a long delay.
Metro Nashville Police closed
part of Interstate 65 about 3:30
p.m. Tuesday. Police later
charged 46-year-old William
Walters with disorderly conduct
and obstructing a roadway.
Police say in a statement that
negotiator Cedric Connolly eventually persuaded Waters to come
down from the sign.
Local media outlets report that
the road closure, which lasted
through much of rush hour,
caused major traffic delays in the
downtown area.
Police say that along with
charges, Walters will undergo a
