Mustangs grapplers win Walker Valley Invitational By TYLER WICKMAN Banner Sports Writer Walker Valley’s wrestling team had their work cut out for them this weekend when they hosted their annual Walker Valley Invitational, but after it was all said and done, the Mustangs took home the hardware for their second time in four years. The morning started with pool play and Walker Valley wrestled Tullahoma first, where they won handily by a score of 42-28. In their second match they beat Stone Memorial 54-27, and then faced Ravenwood in the third round, which ended in a close contest, 42-33. After winning pool B, they qualified to grapple against Ooltewah, who had won pool A after knocking off a tough Knox Halls team by onepoint in round three. Matches started at the heavyweight position (285), and Ooltewah was able to jump out to an early lead after Victor Bednarski won a close decision, 5-0. Chandler Davis put up the first points for the Mustangs by getting a technical fall at the 106pound matchup. Gatapun Jur followed suit in lighting up the scoreboard by collecting an 8-4 decision over Vince Huynh at the 113. Up 8-7 after losing the 120, the Mustangs went on a rampage by tallying up 18 points on three pins by Zane Smith (126), Joseph Munoz (132), and Striker Clark (138). Now with a 19-point lead, it was smooth sailing for the Blue-and-Gold, especially after Zeth Haynie capitalized on six points with the pin at the 152. “Dub V” would only win two more matches out of the next five, but that was enough to solidify a See INVITATIONAL, Page 25 Polk drops road twin bill to Sequoyah Special to the Banner MADISONVILLE — It was homecoming night in “The Chop House” in Madisonville before a standing room only home crowd. The Lady Chiefs and Chiefs were anything but hospitable to their guests as both squads improved to 4-1 in District 5-AA with the girls taking a hard fought 41-34 victory while the Chiefs toyed with the Wildcats in dealing them a 71-39 defeat. The loss kept both Polk squads winless in 5-AA. The Lady Cats and Wildcats will try to rebound on the road at Tennessee Christian on Monday then host bitter rival Copper Basin Thursday. The girls game was a nip-andtuck affair. The Lady Chiefs could never pull away from the feisty Lady Cats. The first half was a low scoring battle that saw Sequoyah lead 10-8 at the half after trailing 3-2 after the first period. Things picked up considerably in the third period for both squads as the Lady Cats knocked down 17 points to hold a one-point lead heading to the fourth. Only two points separated the teams midway through the final quarter, but some key rebounds and sharp defense helped the Lady Chiefs gain a nine-point advantage at 1:45 in the game. Polk tossed in four quick points but it was too little too late after a couple of untimely turnovers doomed the Lady Cats. CHIEFS 71, WILDCATS 39 A combination of red-hot shooting for the home team and ice cold shooting from the visitors caused the Polk County Wildcats get down big after one period, 20-5. The Chiefs blistered the nets in the first quarter with an 18-0 run to start the game including three 3-pointers. A 14-0 run early in the second quarter doomed the Wildcats who continued to have a tough night handling the ball against the cat-quick defense of Sequoyah. Halftime found the Polk boys down 32-7 with no one able to find the range, either on short shots or from behind See POLK, Page 25 loCal NoTeS hoCkey National hockey league eaSTerN CoNFereNCe atlantic Division GP W l oT Pts Florida 41 25 12 4 54 Detroit 41 21 13 7 49 Montreal 42 23 16 3 49 Boston 39 21 14 4 46 Tampa Bay 41 20 17 4 44 Ottawa 41 19 16 6 44 Toronto 39 16 16 7 39 Buffalo 41 15 22 4 34 Metropolitan Division GP W l oT Pts Washington 41 31 7 3 65 N.Y.
