THE CLASSIC - SILVERSTONE SOUVENIR PROGRAMME 2022 | Page 54

RACE PREVIEW
special mention is the beautiful De Tomaso of Westie Mitchell . Hopefully , Mitchell will be recovered after breaking his shoulder in a Formula Ford accident at Brands Hatch last month .
The leaders won ’ t be the only ones battling for position though , and throughout the field the different classes will be having their own tussles , which will be well worth following . Benn Simms , driving the Caravelle Mk3 of Jim Blockley this season , was going so well at Cadwell Park that he was literally flying high in the car , and will be the man to beat in Class D for the drum-brake dry sump rear-engined cars . Joining him in class are the Alexis Mk3 of Stuart Roach , the Gemini Mk 3 of John Chisholm and Michael Hibberd in the recently reacquired and restored family Lotus 20 , in which his son Andrew had his first ever race .

RACE 1 Saturday 09:00 - 09:20 RACE 11 Sunday 09:00 - 09:20
Class C for the earliest rear engine cars has no less than four Cooper T56s , with local man Crispian Besley in his red T56 hoping that he can lead home Andrew Taylor ( green ) and Stuart Tizzard ( blue ). However , they may need to hunt as a pack to have a chance of taking on class leader Nic Carlton-Smith in his Kieft .
The earliest of the Formula Junior designs , the front-engined cars are also well represented , with six different marques amongst the nine entries . Ray Mallock , son of Arthur , will be racing a U2 Mk2 that his father originally designed and built , and will no doubt be the class leader . The desirable Lola Mk2s of US-based Harin de Silva and Justin Fleming from Sussex will do their best to keep him in their sights with Nick Taylor ’ s Elva 100 in close pursuit .
Last but not least , we will very much be remembering Simon Diffey this weekend , a dear member of the FJ family who sadly died earlier this year . He raced in almost every single FJ race at The Classic over the last two decades .
