ON SITE Illovo’s mixed-use affordable site By Eamonn Ryan With its proximity to Gautrain stations, Illovo is becoming a prime residential and commercial location. Illovo Central is the second of four planned mixed-use buildings to be developed in the exclusive new Illovo precinct. 16 - CEC September 2018 I llovo is a suburb of Johannesburg, Gauteng, bordered by Hyde Park, Dunkeld, Sandhurst, Inanda, and Melrose. The suburb is home to many young professionals and creatives because of its close proximity to the business centres of Sandton and Rosebank, and many affordable apartment blocks are located there. Due for completion in January 2020, the 70 Melville Road development — Illovo Central — is rising from the 8.44m basement initially dug. The civils work was completed before the first week in July when construction began of what is to be a multipurpose building, 18 storeys high. Those storeys will consist of: • three basement parking levels • a ground level floor dedicated to communal facilities such as restaurants • another five levels of parking • two levels of office space • a commercial level that includes shared office space, a wellness centre, and an exclusive upmarket entertainment area; and • the remaining six floors make up the residential section, which ranges from studio apartments starting at R914 000 all the way through to R28-million penthouses.
